Hey there, Hakuba travellers. If you’re planning a trip to Hakuba you’re probably already excited for some great skiing and snowboarding powder days. But did you know Hakuba has so much more to offer beyond the ski slopes? There’s a whole world of hidden gems waiting to be discovered by you in this charming ski town.
From hot springs and cultural experiences to outdoor adventures and stunning natural scenery. Theres a bit of something for everyone in Hakuba. In this post, I’ll outline some of the area’s most fun attractions off the slopes. So keep reading on if you’re excited to explore Hakuba beyond the ski resorts.
Hot Springs and Onsens
Lets talk about Onsens. These natural, geothermal pools of mineral-rich water have been a cultural tradition in Japan for centuries and are said to have some pretty amazing healing properties for the body and soul.
What’s great about hot springs in Hakuba is that there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for an outdoor pool with stunning mountain views or an indoor one with a cozy, rustic interior, you’re sure to find a hot spring that suits your taste. Some hot springs are known for their high temperatures, which are perfect for a quick dip, while others have more moderate temperatures that are ideal for a longer soak.

However, if you’re looking to venture outside of Hakuba and explore some nearby hot springs, the neighboring town of Omachi is definitely worth a visit. Omachi is famous for its Omachi Onsen Village (Omachi Onsenkyo), which has a variety of hot springs to choose from. Whether you’re looking for a traditional, rustic experience or a more modern setting, you’ll find something to suit your tastes in Omachi.
So if you’re up for a little hot spring hopping, be sure to check out Omachi Onsen Village and the other nearby hot springs. And as always, remember to follow proper etiquette when visiting hot springs in Japan.

Take a stroll through the town and you’ll find a number of museums that showcase the rich history and art of Japan. You can also visit castles and temples in the area to learn more about the country’s fascinating past.
Museums
One of the best ways to get a glimpse into the cultural heritage of Hakuba is through some of the Museums in Hakuba. We suggest getting started with the Hakuba saegusa art museum, which houses a collection of Japanese art and ceramics.
Another Museum worth visiting is the Hakuba Olympic Museum, where you can learn about the history of the area and its ties to the Winter Olympics, and see the Olympic ski jumps up close.
Matsumoto Castle
One must-visit spot is the Matsumoto Castle, which is just a short drive from Hakuba. This stunning castle is over 400 years old and is considered a national treasure. You’ll be transported back in time as you walk through its halls and admire the intricate architecture.
Zenkoji Temple
This ancient temple, located in Nagano City just a stone’s throw away from Hakuba, is an absolute gem and is considered one of the most important Buddhist sites in all of Japan.
According to legend, the temple houses the very first Buddhist statue ever brought to Japan, which makes it a hugely significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists from all around the world. When you visit Zenkoji, you’ll have the chance to explore the many halls, gardens, and shrines that make up this impressive temple complex. And if you’re lucky, you might even get to participate in some traditional Buddhist ceremonies and rituals!
Nature and Scenic Spots
Its no secret that Hakuba and its neighboring areas are brimming with breathtaking natural attractions and scenic views.
Let’s start by talking about the different types of scenery you can expect to encounter. From towering mountains that seem to touch the sky, to peaceful lakes and picturesque views of the town, you’ll find it all in Hakuba. It’s truly a sight to behold!
If you’re an outdoorsy type, you’ll definitely want to check out the various hiking trails and other activities available. There’s so much to explore and experience in nature around here. Hiking season is between April and November. If you want to hike outside of those months, make sure you’re prepared for snow conditions with the appropriate equipment.
Alright, let’s get down to the good stuff – the best places to soak up all that natural beauty in Hakuba!
Personally, I’d highly recommend checking out Happo Pond. It’s a stunning alpine lake that’s surrounded by lush greenery and towering mountains – a true feast for the eyes!
Another must-see spot is Tsugaike Nature Park, which is famous for its colorful foliage during autumn. If you’re lucky enough to visit during that time of year, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking display of oranges, reds, and yellows.
And of course, no visit to Hakuba would be complete without a trip to the Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Harbor. Even if you’re not into skiing or snowboarding, the views from the top of the mountain are simply unforgettable.
If you’re up for a quick drive, I’d also recommend checking out Aokiko Lake in Omachi. It’s a gorgeous spot where you can marvel at the ever-changing views of the lake depending on the season. Trust me, it’s well worth the trip!
